We have met some really nice people by Hosting students
in our house and that has been good experience for us.
I seriously think,in terms of travelling,staying with Homestay family ...not only saves money,but gives a feel for the country you are in and they can give you lots of ideas where to go and what to see ,while in the country.

It would be nice to find ways to get free airline tickets.That is the a huge expense in travelling.We usually travel as a family,so we buy more than one ticket and it sure adds up a bit too fast.
